Five Second Animal Challenge

5 seconds to draw each of the animals we saw today from memory (badly)

Abdul & black dog

This is not a Churchillian reference to depression - this is a real black dog who insisted on following our boat as we left Manda island - until he finally realised that dogs don't float as well as boats
(imagine how historical events like the battle of Trafalgar would have turned out if the last sentence wasn't fact)

Looking for sea donkeys

The Matondoni Carrot Experiment

Rigorous scientific research in which we find that the donkey inhabitants of the town of Matondoni appear not to desire (or even recognise) carrots...

Sunglasses & sea-donkeys

Abdul has decided to jump into the sea wearing sunglasses. Aforementioned glasses disappear beneath the waves, our varied rescue attempts in vain.

The glasses have gone to the sea donkeys...

Nairobi airport

Guy at the airport looks like a Sopranos extra!

Samaki!*

The cats in Shella are finely attuned to the timing of the fishing catch!

*samaki is Swahili for fish...impressed?

Popeye arms...?

Long Turtleman

Was transfixed by the incredibly long man who watches over the turtle eggs on Manda island. He was described as 'poacher turned gamekeeper' as he is now paid a salary to watch the turtle eggs rather than catch 'em.

Pumba

Developed rather an affinity for warthogs after spotting a lone one & worrying in a ridiculous anthropmorphic way whether it was lonely (- they usually move in pairs or groups)
They have brilliant vertical tails too!

Stick dancing

Rushed sketches of stick dancing in Shella for a wedding.
The whole town seemed to be out for the stick dancing which was punctuated by a sudden torrential downpour - never seen so many people clear an area so quickly
(only the phrase 'here's one off the new record' has ever been the cause of such a swift evacuation from a place of entertainment!)

Wedding guests in Shella

Donkey sex-face

Bruce Lee's sex face - see previous post

Bruce Lee

Shella is treated to the dubious sight of a rather motley crew accompanied by a mzungu riding a donkey through the street. The Donkey is called Bruce Lee, & Bruce Lee is horny. The sight of lady donkeys cause him to throw me off & to launch a rather spectacular kick at Tutti his owner

Peptang

Nairobi ketchup

Lamu in the rain

Sitting in a café in Lamu in a downpour in Lamu.
They are playing Demis Roussos(!)
The skinny man is looking for new tourists, it's a slow day

Tuc-tucs,giraffe tongues & other stories

Things I've learned -
Tuc-tucs are an underrated form of transport,
giraffes I have long blue grey tongues & lovely eyes.
Monkeys in the early morning tend to put me in a good mood
